How to play Categories

  1. Write five to eight categories on the board (an animal, a country, a food, a verb, a job).
  2. Pick a random letter.
  3. Students have two minutes to write one word per category starting with that letter.
  4. Read answers aloud. Unique answers score two points; answers someone else also wrote score one.
  5. Play several rounds with new letters.

Variations

  • Content categories: a mineral, a planet, a scientist, a body part.
  • Also known as "Stop the Bus" in ESL classrooms: the first student to finish shouts "Stop the bus!"
