How to play Heads Up Guessing Game

  1. Write review words, people or ideas on index cards, one per card. Use pictures for non-readers. Split the class into teams.
  2. A guesser from team 1 stands at the front facing the class and holds the first card on their forehead without looking. You can also seat the guesser with their back to the board and project the words.
  3. Start a 60-second timer. The guesser's team gives clues without saying the word, part of the word or a rhyme. They can describe it, give examples or act it out.
  4. When the guesser says the word, they put the card down and take the next one. They can say "Pass" to skip a card.
  5. When time is up, count the correct cards for that team. The next team sends up a guesser.
  6. Play until every student has had a turn as the guesser, then add up the scores.

Variations

  • Acting only: clue-givers may not speak, like Charades.
  • Yes-or-no version: the guesser asks questions such as "Am I an animal?" and the class only answers yes or no.
  • Pairs version: give every pair a small stack of cards so the whole class plays at once.

πŸ’‘ Teacher tips

  • Choose guessers with the random name picker so it is not always the loudest volunteer.
  • If the team gets too loud, line the clue-givers up and let them speak one at a time.
  • Agree before you start on what counts as saying the word, such as "sun" for "sunflower".
