How to play Scoot
- Put one numbered task card on every desk. If some desks are empty, put a "Rest stop" card there (stretch or check your answers) so the rotation stays even.
- Give each student a recording sheet numbered to match the cards. Show the path students will move along (for example, snake through the rows) and walk it once.
- Students answer the card on their own desk in the matching box on their sheet. Start with 60–90 seconds per card.
- Say "Scoot!" Students take their sheet and pencil, move to the next desk on the path and start the next card. The cards stay where they are.
- Repeat until everyone is back at their own desk.
- Go over the answers together, or collect the sheets as a quick check.
Variations
- Around-the-room version: tape the cards on walls and doors and let students move in pairs.
- Self-checking version: write the answer to card 1 on the back of card 2, and so on, so students check as they go.
- Speed scoot: shorten the time each round once students warm up.
💡 Teacher tips
- Remind students to write in the box that matches the card number, not the next empty box. Most mix-ups happen there.
- If a student is stuck, they write "?" and keep moving so the rotation never stops.
- Use a projected timer so everyone moves at the same moment. Shorten it if most students are waiting.
