How to play Splat
- Students stand in a circle, or around the edge of the room if desks stay put. One student, the splatter, stands in the middle.
- The splatter points at someone and says "Splat!" That student must duck down right away.
- The two students on either side of the ducking student turn to each other, point and say "Splat!" Whoever is slower sits down.
- If the student who was pointed at does not duck before a neighbor says "Splat!", that student sits down instead.
- The circle closes up as students sit. When two are left, they stand back to back while you call out words. On "Splat!" they turn, point and the faster one wins.
- The winner becomes the splatter for the next round.
Variations
- Review final: in the last duel, read review words or numbers and tell them to turn only on a certain kind (a verb, a multiple of 7, a mammal). Turning on the wrong word loses.
- Name version: instead of "Splat!", the two neighbors must say each other's names. It is great in the first week of school.
π‘ Teacher tips
- Pointing only, no touching. Students who are out become judges of who was faster.
- You make the call on close ones. If it is a tie, both stay in.
