How to play Higher or Lower
- Everyone stands up. Draw a card and show it to the class. Aces are 1, jacks 11, queens 12 and kings 13.
- Ask "Higher or lower?" Students put their hands on their head for higher or on their knees for lower.
- Flip the next card. Students who guessed wrong sit down. If it is the same number, everyone stays standing.
- The new card is now the one to beat. Keep going until two or three students are left standing.
- Everyone stands up again for a new round.
Variations
- Review version: ask number questions instead of drawing cards ("How many legs does an insect have?" then "How many sides does a hexagon have?"). Students guess if the next answer is higher or lower before you reveal it.
- Estimation version: give a fact ("The Nile is about 6,650 km long"), then name another river and ask if it is longer or shorter.
- Team streaks: each team guesses together and earns a point for every correct call in a row.
π‘ Teacher tips
- Students who sit down can keep guessing quietly and tally their own score, so nobody is bored.
- With older students, talk about probability: after a 2, "higher" is the smart guess. Ask them to explain why.
