Loud and Quiet (Big Voice, Small Voice)

The teacher says a word loudly and the class repeats it quietly, or says it quietly and the class says it back loudly. It turns vocabulary drilling into a listening game and is a staple of English classes in China, where it is called 大小声.

How to play Loud and Quiet (Big Voice, Small Voice)

  1. Hold up a flash card or point to a word. Explain the rule: "When I'm loud, you're quiet. When I'm quiet, you're loud."
  2. Say the word in a big voice: "ELEPHANT!" The class whispers back: "elephant."
  3. Say the next word in a tiny voice: "pencil." The class answers in a strong voice: "PENCIL!"
  4. Switch quickly and unpredictably. When students copy your volume by mistake, laugh it off and keep going.
  5. After 6–10 words, finish with a whisper so the class ends calm.

Variations

  • Copy version for young learners: students match your volume exactly before you try the opposite rule.
  • More voices: use high and low, fast and slow, or happy and sad voices.
  • Student leader: a student holds the cards and leads the class.

💡 Teacher tips

  • Agree on how loud "loud" is before you start (a strong voice, never a scream). The noise meter makes the limit visible.
  • Always end on a whisper so the next activity starts quietly.
